As a Senior Research Scientist,Manager and Coordinator, she has been contributing for the last 10 years at an NGO named as Population Health and Research Institute, Trivandrum, India. Dr. Leena KB is also the Clinical Trial Coordinator at the Dept. of Gastroenterology, Sree Gokulam Medical College & Research Foundation, Trivandrum, India, since 2006. She is the founder and the Project Director of the Holistic Health and Research Institute, Trivandrum, India, since 2016. Also, she has been contributing to academics as the Course Co-ordinator of PG Diploma in Yoga Therapy Course, conducted by Kerala University, Trivandrum, India, since 2014.
Dr. Leena KB having a 28 years long career in which she has been contributing actively into several healthcare research projects. There at PHRI, she is participating as the co-investigator into many projects that includes the Trivandrum Tobacco study with a male Cohort of 400, 000 subjects recruited from 2000 -2004 and are being followed up at every 3 to 4 years’ interval (Supported by NIH and University of Oxford, UK). She is associated as CO-PI in other studies such as NAFLD (Supported by Karolinska University, Sweden) , GERD (Supported by Kansas University and Mayo Clinic, US), Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (Supported by NHS, UK), the cause of death by verbal autopsy under SRS (Supported by Govt. of India), FFQ and Nutrition (Supported by IARC, WHO unit, Lyon), and the study of GERD & Gut Microbiota (Supported by Karolinska University, Sweden) . She was the course assistant for the Global Medicine program at Karolinska Institute, Sweden, and Govt Medical College Trivandrum from 1996-2006. Also, she was the course assistant for the Linnaeus Palme Exchange Program between Karolinska Institute, Sweden, and Govt Medical College Trivandrum from 2001-2006.
Current areas of her research works are: Tobacco Epidemiology; Chronic disease epidemiology; Mortality patterns in Kerala; Risk Factor assessment in non-communicable diseases; Assessment of nutrient intake in Kerala: and Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and progression to chronic liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma in Kerala.
Dr. Leena KB is inspired of her father, Late Dr. Balakumaran K S, an Ayurvedic Physician having 50 years of public health service at her home town, Thrissur, Kerala. Her strong passion for Yoga led her to become one of the founders of the Trust, Holistic Health, and Research Institute, established in 2016. Since then it has been successfully conducting so many health awareness programmes in the community, schools and corporate sectors on hepatitis, diabetes, NAFLD, diet, nutrition, and Yoga therapy under the leadership of Dr. Leena KB.
She has received many fellowships and trainings in Healthcare research from accredited institutions in India and Abroad. Her commitments in the field of scientific research entitled her to obtain two milestone awards in her career. The first is, the Young Investigator Award (1993) - Dr. R B Singh award of International College of Nutrition in the IV World Congress of Nutrition, held at Cochin, India. The second is, the Young Scientist Award in Health Care (1997) by the Science and Technology, Govt. of Kerala State, India, at the IX Kerala Science Congress. She had a 20 years of post doctoral works, include many research projects and clinical trials at Govt. Medical College Trivandrum, India (Sponsored by a number of pioneer pharmaceuticals and international scientific agencies such as IPICS Sweden, CDC Atlanta, USA, and Centre for Global Health Research Toronto, Canada) She pursued her doctoral research work with joint CSIR-UGC fellowship, on diseases affecting to pancreas, liver and related digestive system and it was facilitated by the Dept. of Gastroenterology, Medical College, Trivandrum, India. Prior to her doctorate in Biochemistry from the University of Kerala, India, she had her post graduate degree in Life Sciences Education from the Regional College of Education, (NCERT) Utkal University, Bhubaneswar, India.
